Revolving Door Working Principle: Two-Wing vs Three-Wing vs Four-Wing Comparison

Revolving doors are architectural features that provide continuous traffic flow while maintaining thermal separation between interior and exterior environments. Understanding the differences between two-wing, three-wing, and four-wing configurations helps in selecting the appropriate type for specific applications.

1. Basic Operating Principle

Revolving doors consist of rotating door wings that move around a central shaft within a circular enclosure. The rotating assembly creates a continuous seal at the center post while allowing passage through the spaces between wings. This design prevents draft infiltration compared to swinging doors and maintains climate separation essential for buildings with heating or air conditioning systems.

2. Two-Wing Configuration

Two-wing revolving doors, also called automatic revolving doors, have two opposing wings that divide the enclosure into two passage compartments. This configuration provides the smallest footprint and lowest installation cost among revolving door types. Two-wing doors are suitable for low-to-medium traffic applications in retail stores and small commercial buildings. The narrower passage width requires users to slow walking speed when entering, which can cause congestion during peak traffic periods.

3. Three-Wing Configuration

Three-wing revolving doors are the most common configuration in commercial buildings worldwide. The three wings create three passage compartments, allowing smoother continuous flow compared to two-wing designs. Traffic capacity is approximately 50% higher than two-wing doors of equivalent diameter. Three-wing doors provide better thermal performance due to the smaller individual compartment size reducing air exchange per cycle.

4. Four-Wing Configuration

Four-wing revolving doors, also called heritage or glass wings, feature four wings creating four passage compartments. The wide wings require larger diameter enclosures, typically 3.6 meters or more. This configuration provides the highest traffic capacity and best thermal performance due to minimum compartment volume. Four-wing doors are typically specified in luxury hotels, high-end office buildings, and prestigious public buildings where aesthetics and maximum comfort are priorities.

5. Selection Criteria

Diameter selection depends on traffic volume, available space, and aesthetic requirements. For buildings with peak traffic exceeding 100 persons per minute, specify four-wing doors with 3.6-4.0 meter diameters. Medium traffic of 50-80 persons per minute is adequately served by three-wing doors of 2.4-3.0 meter diameter. Low traffic applications under 40 persons per minute can use two-wing doors of 2.0-2.4 meter diameter.
